THERMAL REGULATION OF LED CIRCUITS
Monday, April 16th, 2012
The issue of heat management is at the core of many LED-based lighting applications. A reliable solution maintains the longevity of the LED by keeping the LED junction temperature below the recommended limit.
One answer to this problem is to mount a massive heat sink, wasting space and money. However, there is a better solution with the use of wide input range LED drivers. The temperature of the LED can be sensed by a thermistor mounted near the LED and then translated into a voltage signal in order to reduce the current through the LED appropriately to meet the power derating specified by the LED manufacturer.
At Prism Tradeshow Lighting we advise this technique with a combination of a light heat sink application on all products for permanent LED lighting installations. By doing so, our LED-based lighting products for permanent installations do not suffer from LED burnout or fading effect, allowing us to safely guarantee the longevity of our permanent LED lighting designs to over 50,000 hours.
